Five people were detained by the police in West Bengal’s Malda on Saturday in connection with a horrific incident where two women were allegedly beaten and paraded half-naked by local shopkeepers after they were accused of theft.

The shocking incident took place three to four days ago in Malda’s Pakuahat area, triggering massive outrage among the local community. As per initial reports, the women were caught by locals on suspicion followed by brutal thrashing.

The video, which has now gone viral on internet, showed several women were seen assaulting the accused pair. The police has claimed that both the women were caught stealing red-handed, leading to the subsequent beating at the hands of local female shopkeepers.

Police claims:
As per police, the incident happened in Pakuhat area in Malda 3 to 4 days back.
“Two women were caught on suspicion of theft by local traders. Both women were thrashed by the local female traders. Later, both women left or escaped from the area and did not lodge any police complaint. Traders also did not file any complaint in this regard,” West Bengal Police said.
