AHMEDABAD: The man who invaded the pitch during the Men’s Cricket World Cup final between India and Australia on Sunday has been sent to one-day remand till 5 pm on Tuesday by the court.
The incident, which took place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, was a major security breach and has raised questions about the preparedness of the stadium authorities.
The man, who hails from Australia, ran onto the pitch and hugged Indian cricketer Virat Kohli. He was wearing a t-shirt that read “Stop Bombing Palestine,” a mask with the Palestine flag colors, and was carrying the rainbow flag of the LGBT community.
The incident was not shown during the live telecast of the match, but a clip of it was widely circulated on social media.

*The man was quickly detained by security officials at the stadium and handed over to the Ahmedabad police. He has been identified as Wayne Johnson, an Australian of Chinese-Filipino origin.
In a statement to the police, Johnson said that he entered the ground to meet Virat Kohli and that he is a supporter of Palestine.
