BIG | Twitter becomes first major social platform to allow weed ads in America

In its major step towards creating a Cannabis-friendly environment, Twitter on Wednesday became the first social media platform to allow cannabis companies to market their business, brands and products in the United States of America.
Earlier, Twitter had allowed advertising hemp-derived CBD topical products. Meanwhile, other social media giants such as Facebook, Instagram and TikTok have followed a ‘no cannabis advertising policy’ as marijuana remains illegal at federal level.
In its major announcement, Twitter said that it will permit cannabis companies to advertise, only if they have a proper license, pass through its approval process, only target jurisdictions where they are licensed to operate and most importantly, do not target people below 21 years.
With 21 on board, 37 states have legalised medical marijuana programmes in the United States of America. Only two states – Idaho and Nebraska – do not allow for any kind of legal marijuana use.
Meanwhile, pot companies were quick to welcome the changes suggested by Twitter.
“This is a pretty massive win for legal cannabis marketers,” Cresco Labs said.
“This change speaks to the growing acceptance of cannabis as a mainstream wellness category, and we are hopeful it will serve as a catalyst for other social media platforms to follow suit,” Kate Lynch of Curaleaf, the biggest Cannabis company operating in the United States, said.
