Tata Group Becomes First Indian iPhone Manufacturer As Wistron Approves Factory Sale

The Tata Group has successfully acquired Wistron’s operations in India, marking a significant development in the production of Apple iPhones in the country, catering to both the domestic and global markets.
Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar announced this exciting news on the social media platform X.
In his announcement, he expressed, “In just two and a half years, the Tata Group will commence the production of iPhones in India for both the local and international markets. Congratulations to the Tata team for taking over Wistron’s operations.“
Accompanying his statement was a press release from Wistron, in which the company disclosed that it had convened a board meeting and granted approval to its subsidiaries, SMS InfoComm (Singapore) Pte. Ltd. and Wistron Hong Kong Limited, to enter into a share purchase agreement with Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL) for the sale of its entire indirect stake in Wistron InfoComm Manufacturing (India) Private Limited.
The press release further stated, “Once the relevant agreements are confirmed and signed by both parties, the deal will proceed to obtain the necessary approvals. Following the completion of the transaction, Wistron will make the required announcements and filings in accordance with applicable regulations.”

This announcement signifies that the Tata Group is set to become the first Indian company to manufacture iPhones in India.
Chandrasekhar credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the visionary PLI (Production-Linked Incentive) scheme, noting that it has already positioned India as a trusted and prominent hub for smartphone manufacturing and exports.
He added, “The Government of India, represented by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), fully supports the growth of Global Indian Electronics companies, which, in turn, will support global electronic brands looking to establish India as their trusted manufacturing and talent partner. This aligns with the Prime Minister’s goal of making India a global electronics powerhouse.”
This milestone not only signifies a significant achievement for the Tata Group but also underscores India’s increasing prominence in global electronics manufacturing.
