Student found hanging in a hostel room in IIT Madras, 4th such case this year

Chennai: In yet another shocking case of suicide at India’s premium education institute, a student was found hanging in a hostel room at IIT Madras on Friday.
The second-year B Tech student pursuing Chemical Engineering is suspected to have died by suicide.
Notably, this would be the fourth such case in IIT Madras this year. The IIT Madras in a statement confirmed the death but didn’t specify any reason.
Earlier, a 32-year-old PhD student of IIT Madras died by suicide in his room. He was from West Bengal. In March, a 3rd-year student, resident of Andhra Pradesh, died by suicide on the same campus.
“We are deeply anguished to convey the untimely passing away of an undergraduate student from the Chemical Engineering Department in the afternoon of 21 April 2023 in his hostel room. The institute has lost one of its own, and the professional community has lost a good student,” read IIT statement issued by IIT Madras.
