Separatist Leader Mirwaiz Farooq Released From House Arrest After 4 Years; Offers Friday Prayer

Jammu and Kashmir: Four years after he was detained in the wake of abrogation of Article 370, Hurriyat Conference Chairman Mirwaiz Farooq was released from house arrest on September 22, Thursday.

Thereafter, Farooq led the Friday congretational prayers at the Jamia Masjid in Srinagar.

Notably, Farooq moved Jammu and Kashmir High Court on September 15, seeking release from detention.

Meanwhile, National Conference Leader Omar Abdullah ‘welcomed’ the decision to release Farooq and urged the administration to allow him to move freely, interact with people.’

Farooq was put under house detention on August 4, 2019 – a day before the central government abrogated Article 370 of the Constitution, which gave Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, and bifurcated the state into two Union Territories.
