Sanju Samson reveals why R Ashwin opened the batting for Rajasthan Royals instead of Jos Buttler

Much to everyone’s surprise, R Ashwin opened the innings for Rajasthan Royals when the side had an uphill task to chase as Punjab Kings posted 197 on board.

While Jos Buttler is a regular opener for Royals, the right-handed Englishman came out to bat third down during RR vs Punjab Kings match, on Wednesday evening.

The move to sent Ashwin in the absence of Buttler backfired for the inaugural champions as the side was reduced to 26/2. While many were wondering why R Ashwin was promoted at top of the order when Royals had such a huge task to chase, skipper Sanju Samson revealed the reason behind his move.

“Jos wasn’t fully fit. He had a stitch on. He injured his fingers while catching,” Sanju Samson revealed.

While opening the innings, Ashwin could not make much contribution as he was ducked by Arshdeep Singh.

Meanwhile, Jos Buttler too looked out of touch as he could only add 19 off 11 deliveries. With lack of inconsistency in the middle, Royals had to pay heavy price as they registered their maiden defeat in the season.
