Murder, Kashmiri Pandit, Numb Valley: Chronology of a decade-long terror

Where do we go now? We will only die here! Is this not our Kashmir? Tells a local Kashmiri Pandit lady while sobbing outside her house. She was a close aide to the 43-year-old man shot dead outside his home in Choudharygund village of South Kashmir’s Shopian district on Saturday morning, sparking yet another wave of outrage among the community.
According to DIG Sujit Kumar, a little-known terror outfit ‘Kashmir Freedom Fighters’ claimed responsibility for the murder of a Kashmiri Pandit on Shopian. The area was immediately cordoned off, and a hunt was launched to nab the assailant. Notably, Bhat was the seventh Kashmiri Pandit killed since 2020.
While taking responsibility for the murder, the terror outfit released a statement claiming that “Wherever you (Kashmiri Pandit) are, don’t think you are out of our eyes. It is just a matter of time and place. Next turn will be yours,” the outfit further stated,” read the statement.
The Lt Governor of J&k, Manoj Sinha, also expressed his condolences for killing a Kashmiri Pandit in Shopian and said ‘Attack on Puran Krishan Bhat by terrorists in Shopian is a dastardly act of cowardice. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. I assure the people that the perpetrators and those aiding and abetting terrorists will be severely punished.”
Stressing the security being provided to the community and especially the region where an unfortunate incident occurred, DIG Sujit Kumar said that there was security, our guard, for this cluster. “We are looking at the reason. He had gone out on a scooter and just returned home,” added the officer. While speaking to The Quotes, Mr Sunil Pandita, a Kashmiri Pandita residing in the Jammu region, claimed while the government is claiming normalcy in the region, Kashmir Pandits are feeling the terror.
“Earlier, we could identify those who were against us, but now no one can identify them. Earlier, stones were pelted, not we are being shot dead. Even movies like Kashmiri Files are just a medium of propaganda. No one stands with us on the ground,” said Mr Pandita.
Even several renowned Kashmiri Pandits and the locals expressed their anguish via their social media post and targeted the Center government for ‘failing to protect the community in the region.’ Check out reactions.
