Punjab: Massive crackdown on Amritpal Singh-backed Waris Punjab De is underway by Punjab Police across the state. Total of 112 associates of the group have been arrested, including 34 arrest taking place on Sunday, March 19 in connection with fugitive Amritpal Singh. Apart from imposing section 144 of the CrPc – prohibiting congregations – internet and messaging services in some parts of the Union Territory have been snapped by the state government in order to curb spread of any misinformation.
Massive crackdown was instigated after Amritpal and his associates barged into Ajnala police station near Amritsar, for the release of one of important associates of the group, which led to deadly tussle between the group’s associates and police. The scuffle caused grave injuries to several police personnel.

“Police is working as per law. People have suspicions, but the prime accused Amritpal Singh has not been arrested yet. As soon as the arrest is made, we will inform you,” says Punjab IGP Sukhchain Singh Gill.
According to fresh reports, a new FIR has been lodged against Amritpal Singh, his uncle Harjeet Singh and driver Harpeet Singh for allegedly threatening a family to provide the trio a shelter.
“We have a very strong suspcion of ISI’s involvement in this matter. Not just ISI, but foreign funding is also active to provoke instability in the state: Based on the cirumstances and facts gathered, we are clear that ISI is involved in this matter,” said Punjab’s Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sukhchain Singh Gill.
While addressing the media, Punjab’s Inspector General of Police said that fugitive spearatist leader Amrit Pal Singh was forming a miltia as bulletproof jackets and rifles, with ‘AKF’ written on them, were recovered from his aides.
