Indian Football Team Is Likely To Miss Asian Games 2023. But Why

Despite producing a clincial performance recently at the SAFF 2023 championshp and lifting the title, Sunil Chettri and Co. are facing the fear of losing a chance to appear in the Asian Games 2023 – scheduled to start from September 23 in Hangzhou, China.

As per the norms, teams need to be among the top-eight ranked team in Asia to be able to play in Asian Games 2023. Both the men’s and women’s football teams are likely to miss the Asian Games for the second time in a row.

As Sunil Chettri-led side currently ranks 18^th and women’s team ranks 10^th, both the side are unlikely to qualify for the Asian Games 2023. However, All India Football Federation is likely to appeal to the Sports Minister to reconsider its norms.

 “This is a decision taken by the government. So, we have to abide by it. However, we will make an appeal to the government to reconsider the decision as far as football is concerned,” AIFF Secretary General Shaji Prabhakaran said.

He further noted that Team India’s performance is extremely encouraging and will be a great boos if team will participate in the Asian Games. AIFF had planned to send Under-23 squad, with Igor Stimac, to participate in the Asian Games 2023.
