India is now world’s most populous country: UN

According to the latest data released by the United Nations Population Fund, India is now the most populous country in the world with 2.9 million more people than China
The UNFPA’s ‘The State of World Population Report, 2023’ titled ‘8 Billion Lives, Infinite Possibilities: The Case for Rights and Choices’ released on Wednesday said India’s population is 1,428 million while China’s stood at 1,425.7 million, a difference of 2.9 million.
The latest figures were given under the category of ‘Demographic Indicators’ in the report.
As per UNFPA report, 25 percent of India’s population is in the age group of 0-14, 18 percent in 10-19, 26 percent in the 10-24, 68 percent in 15-64 and 7 percent above 65.
Meanwhile China has 14 percent of its population above the age of 65, while 17 percent is in the age group of 0-14. 12 percent of its population is in between 10 to 19. 69 percent between 10-24, and 14 percent is in the age group of 15-64.
Report further claimed that China is doing better than India in the context of life expectancy, which in the case of women is 82 and 76 that of men. The figures for India are 74 and 71.
Quoted by Hindustan Tomes, Andrea Wojner, UNFPA’s India representative said that India’s young population in a consumer-driven economy will be a major factor in driving the country’s develop and presents an enormous opportunity for the country’s economic growth.
