Trinidad: Despite suffering 4-run defeat and delivering below-par performance, Indian skipper Hardik Pandya has backed his decision to chase in the first T20 International at Trinidad on Thursday, August 4.
While chasing 149, Indian batters could not produce a match-defining performance except debutant Tilak Varma (39). Suryakumar Yadav’s 21 was the second-best performance in the series opener but none of the batters could not define the game with their performance.
Meanwhile, Caribbean bowlers turned the game on its head by restricting India at 145/9 in 20 overs. Obed McCoy, Jason Holder and Romario Shepherd picked two wickets each in the second innings. Holder, for his incredible spell, was adjudged Player of the Match.
Let’s check who said what after the conclusion of he first T20 international between India and West Indies.
Rovman Powell (Winning captain):
It’s a very good feeling. We talked about starting this series on a positive note and the guys did that. It was our game to lose, they didn’t have a set batter and I was confident going into the last over. This series will be decided on how West Indies batters’ bat against spin in the middle overs. We have the power to load in the backend.
Jason Holder (Player of the Match):
The amount of cricket I have been playing for the last three years, it’s lot. I try to find some passengers of break, get some time off, refresh and comeback again. I think it (break from the ODIs) was needed. I was happy that I stuck with my plans. We got early wickets, which is really important.
Hardik Pandya (Losing captain):
We were right in the chase and quite comfortable there. We made some errors which costed us the game which is fine. A young team will make mistakes. We will grow together. In T20 cricket, if you lose wickets, it becomes difficult to chase down any total, that’s exactly what happened.
