Five-Team T20 Cricket Likely To Feature in Olympics 2028: Report

In a significant development, Cricket in its T20 format is likely to be part of the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles and beyond.

As reported by the Guardian, the prospect of the T20 format is very likely and men’s and women’s competition – with gold medals at stake – is very much on the cards.

Reports have hinted that the current proposal is for five teams in each competition (men’s and women’s) with qualification solely based on ICC Rankings.

The Guardian has reported that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is eying major financial benefits with cricket’s inclusion in the Olympics.

The current broadcasting rights in India for the 2024 Paris Olympics are reported to be £15.6m (₹165 crore), but IOC is expecting it to rise to £150m (₹1585 crore) for 2028 if cricket is included in LA 2028.

Cricket’s history with Olympics:

In it’s only and rare appearance at Olympics, cricket features at the event in the 1990 Paris Olympics but that was just a one-off game between a team from Great Britain and one from France.
