District administration at Mumbai’s Suburban division to sponsor education of 140 children of ex workers

In a significant development, District Legal Service Authority of Mumbai Suburban division has decided to sponsor educational responsibility of 140 minor children of sex workers from Sonapur, Bhandup.

Besides Kamathipura, Sonapur is one of the biggest red-light areas in Mumbai. The Indian Express has reported that Satish Hiwale, secretary DLSA-Mumbai-Suburban, scouted the district and has identified t140 children, between the age of seven and 17 years.

“Many of the children have already been enrolled to charitable schools, and started attending their classes. Two children who have been diagnosed with mental ailments would be shifted to shelter home for better health,” Mr. Hiwale said.

Meanwhile, DSLA officials have also informed that separate accommodation facilities have been arrange for the children. The DLSA is also felicitating them Aadhar cards.

“There are children from Kamathipura who have gone abroad for studies. Some have become accountant, architect…given an opportunity, these children can also shine in their lives,” Mr. Hiwale added.

The DLSA officer also revealed that he plans to constitute two teams of lawyers who would examine the hygiene conditions of the sex workers in the area.
