Australia, Netherlands Observe Minute’s Silence For Late Bishan Singh Bedi

NEW DELHI: Australia and Netherlands players paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Bishan Singh Bedi, former India captain, ahead of their 2023 ODI World Cup game at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium. Watch the video here..

Both teams observed a minute’s silence in memory of Bedi before their match on Wednesday. Bedi, who had a stand named after him at the Kotla venue, was a prominent figure in Indian cricket. He featured in 67 Tests for India, claiming 266 wickets with 14 five-wicket hauls and one 10-wicket haul.

The veteran cricketer passed away at the age of 77 after battling a prolonged illness. He is survived by his wife Anju, son Angad, and daughter Neha.

Bedi’s international career spanned from his national team debut in 1966 to 1979. He was appointed as the captain in 1976, succeeding Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, and led the team to a Test victory against the West Indies in Port of Spain. This achievement was followed by India’s 2-0 win against New Zealand at home.

Bedi, who began his domestic cricket with Northern Punjab, moved to Delhi during the 1968-69 Ranji Trophy season and emerged as the leading wicket-taker in India’s premier domestic red-ball competition in 1974-75. His contributions to Indian cricket remain celebrated and respected.
