Mumbai: Renowned art director Nitin Chandrakant Desai has died by suicide at the age of 57.

As per fresh reports, Nitin Desai was found dead at his studio in Karjat, Maharashtra. Police has said that prima facie it looks like a case of death by suicide and investigation is going on.

“Today morning, Shri Nitin Desai’s body was found hanging in ND Studios. We are investigating all angles,” Somnath Gharge, SP, Raigad said.

PTI report stated that Desai had defaulted on a Rs. 252-crore loan to it’s financial creditor and a bankruptcy court had admitted an insolvency petition against his company last week.

Desai’s company, ND’s Art World Pvt. Ltd. had borrowed Rs. 185 crores through two loans from ECL Finance in 2016 and 2018 and troubles with repayments started from January 2020.

In a 20-years long career, Nitin Desai worked with filmmakers such as Ashutosh Gowarikar, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Rajkumar Hirani and Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Desai is regarded to be the brain child behind the sets of films like Lagaan, 1942: A Love Story, Devdas, Lage Raho Munnabhai and Once Upon A Time in Mumbai.

His last project as an art director was Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Panipat. Desai also created the sets of Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire (2008).
