Amritpal Singh On Hunger Strike In Dibrugarh Jail Seeking Telephone Access And Good Food; Administration Denies

Months after being caught after extensive search operation by country’s highest intelligence agencies along with the Punjab police, Waris Punjab De chief and prominent Pro-Khalistan leader Amritpal Singh, along with his aides has started a hunger in Dibrugarh jail in Assam over ‘no access of phone and poor food quality in jail.’

Notably, Amritpal Singh has been arrested under the National Security Act (NSA). The development was disclosed by Amritpal Singh’s wife Kirandeep Kaur after she met Amritpal in jail on Thursday.

As reported by Hindustan Times, Kirandeep too has decided to go on a hunger strike. “Every week, I travel from Amritsar to Dibrugarh jail to meet my husband. I met him today as well. I learnt during the meeting that all the Sikh prisoners, including Amritpal, are on hunger strike,” she was quoted the daily publication.

Singh’s wife also revealed that Amritpal and his close aides are on hunger strike because they are not allowed to contact their respective families over the phone by the Punjab government.

Access to phones:

If they are given this facility an amount from Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 25,000 can be saved per family members who visit the jail. Every family cannot afford this expense. This will also keep them mentally fit,” she added.

Bad quality of food:

She also alleged that the quality of food is not good and it is prepared by those who consume tobacco – which is against the Sikh Code of Conduct. “These issues are affecting their health. The government will have to resolve these issues as they are demanding basic facilities and not VIP treatment,” she added.

On April 23 when Amritpal Singh was arrested by the Punjab police from a gurudwara at Rode village in Moga district and was sent to Dibrugarh central jail in Assam under NSA.
