Allahabad HC Allows ASI Survey Of Gyanvapi Complex In Varanasi

ASI starts survey gyanvapi mosque

Prayagraj: In a significant development, Allahabad High Court allowed scientific survey by the Archaelogical Survey of India (ASI) of Gyanvapi complex in Varanasi.

The Allahabad High Court on Thursday upheld a Varanasi court’s order allowing the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to conduct a survey of the Gyanvapi mosque complex.

The high court, meanwhile, dismissed the Anjuman Intezamia Masjid Committee’s plea, saying that the survey can resume immediately.

On July 27, the court had reserved its order on a plea against the ASI survey. On July 21, a Varanasi court directed the ASI to conduct the survey, including excavations, wherever necessary, to determine if the mosque was built at a place where a temple existed earlier.

Notably, the ASI had started the survey on July 24, but stayed hours after by the Supreme Court after the mosque committee approached it allowing time for the committee to appeal against the lower court’s order.
